Also optionally you can click on the "Colors" tab on the left in the Preferences, then click on the "Minimap" tab, and click the checkbox beside, "Display rings on the mini map indicating the whisper, say and shout chat ranges."
When you type in nearby chat and hit [Enter] that is the normal 'say' range, if you press [Shift] + [Enter] that will be a "Whisper" and [Ctrl] + [Enter] is "Shout."
Those ranges are similar to Real Life(RL) where you would have to be close to someone to hear a whisper, and a within several meters to hear someone speaking in a normal voice, and not too far away to hear someone shout.
